ROXLEE
ROXLEE’s string of experimental short films from the 80s such as Spit/Optik,The Great Smoke, Lizard and Juan Gapang are simultaneously harrowing, funny,
bizarre and poignant. Compulsive wonder amidst extreme heat, his studies picture a Philippines society on the verge of a physical and psychic meltdown. His
imaginative frictions function like a bamboo laser beam - amassing and firing dirt, flicker and energy, as much as urban detritus, dead bodies, nocturnal apparitions and buffoon strategies – burning through matter and law like the great smoke.
SURROGATE PREY & ELEMENTO
Creating original soundtracks for Roxlee’s short films are two underground acts from the Philippines: the Doom/ Sludge Heavy Metal band SURROGATE PREY (Ralye Ibanez, Gani Simpliciano and Allan Diaz), whose slow and down-ridden heavy tone of music, countless shows in lesbian bars and series of drug-related arrests keep cult fans awake for their
upcoming release The Emptiness We Seek; and ELEMENTO, led by artist Lirio Salvador and an army of sound sculptures-cum-musical instruments (called ‘sandata’) crafted from metal pipes, stainless steel, bicycle parts and other industrial materials.
