Repetition and seriality have been a recurrent mode of artistic production to some of the most prolific contemporary artists. Umberto Eco, famous Italian scholar of semiotics, believes that, today, there is in operation a sense of aesthetic repitition involving a radical conception of seriality: one that ‘wholly escapes the “modern” idea of literature and art.’ This involves a new concept, ‘the infinity of the text,’ whereby ‘variability’ as a purely formal principle becomes the object of aesthetic pleasure and interest. Serial Killers is a response to parallel notions of seriality.
Seriality as conceptual strategy, considered by most critics as a postmodern aesthetic, is reflected in the works of these selected artists in their seemingly endless body of work, blurring randomness, and, or predetermination, in their repetitiousness.
