Jump-cut surveys an annual harvest of videos done by young Filipino artists working with new media within the creatively incestuous environment provided by the funds-weary underground and alternative art scene in Metro Manila. The selection aims to present a cross section of works done by these artists on shoe string budgets who on regular days make a living doing animation, cinematography, television commercials, motion graphics, production design, art direction and editing for big commercial production houses and television broadcasting companies. While there is no particular strand that tries to string the videos together, most of the works respond to the vicissitudes of the everyday life in this vast megalopolis caught in the quagmire of a rich cultural heritage and acute moral poverty on the part of the state. 16 million people in Metro Manila, around the same population of Australia, struggle to make life against a backdrop of political disarray with only their indomitable spirit feeding on a national aspiration that seems to be more distant decade after decade, generation after generation.

Jump-cut (to Darwin) is the first outbound video exhibition organized by Green Papaya Art Projects. It also sustains a cultural exchange established between Green Papaya and 24Hr Art since 2003. The selection in this exhibition includes works by some of the most notable Filipino film/video makers in the country today. Among them are Raymund Red (Palme d’Or winner for his short film Anino in the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. A graduate of the Philippine High School for the Arts and the University of the Philippines, he trained at the Mowelfund Film Institute and the U.P. Film Center before taking on a residency at the German Academic Exchange Institute in Berlin. His works had been shown in many prestigious film festivals in the U.S., Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Belgium among others), Rico Maria Ilarde (studied filmaking in the U.S. before doing production work for some notable films in Manila like Shake, Rattle and Roll and Z-Man. His film Beneath the Cogon was named best feature film in the Rojo Sangre Buenos Aires Film Festival 2005 and had been shown at the Montevideo Fantastic Film Festival in Uruguay and in six other film festivals worldwide. His recent film work, Woman of Mud, was screened at the last Festival Internacional de Cinema de Catalunya 2006), and Roxlee (a.k.a. Roque Federizon Lee is hailed as a hero and a father of experimental and underground cinema by his younger peers and is an advocate of independent filmmaking in the Philippines. Apart from making animated and collage films, he is also a comic strip artist. A recipient of countless awards from the Cultural Center of the Philippines, his body of work truly represents the spirit of the underground.
